- Musical Talk

Fresh from sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, Wit and Mirth returns to the Lilypad for a special Thanksgiving weekend performance. In 1698 Thomas d’Urfey published the smash-hit book of comic songs, Wit and Mirth. David William Hughes sings some of them, some of his own, and some of yours which he’ll make up for you. The 17th century has never been so funny.

Known for ‘consummate musicality that brings tears to the eyes” (ScotsGay Arts), David William Hughes is a singer, composer, conductor, and actor based in Boston, MA, whose work combines comedy, early music, and historical research. Born in the UK, David holds bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Oxford, where he studied composition with Martin Suckling, and voice with David Crown, and was a member of the renowned comedy troupe the Oxford Imps. David has performed as a soloist throughout the US and the UK. In 2018, he wrote Elizabethan, a new musical based on Renaissance songs, which played to packed houses and critical acclaim in New York, Boston, London, and at the Edinburgh Fringe, and was described as ‘hilarious… skilfully written, and pleasingly silly’ (FringeGuru). In 2019, David made his Australian debut at the Adelaide Fringe with Elizabethan. Since 2014, David has directed the chamber choir Tactus Ensemble, who have been praised for their ‘beautifully illuminated… viscerally satisfying’ performances (Boston Musical Intelligencer).
