Ebinho Cardoso & Catarina dos Santos Quartet

$20 Cover @ the Door / Start 8pm / Doors 7pm / Seated and Standing Show

The quartet of Ebinho Cardoso and Catarina dos Santos brings a new sound to contemporary Jazz – a fresh new approach to composition, where their common roots combine harmoniously, tinged of Brazilian, Angolan, Cape Verdean and Portuguese rich grooves.

Ebinho and Catarina begin collaborating in 2011, in Catarina’s band – vocals/percussion, drumset, and two basses, where Ebinho’s cutting edge piccolo bass style, and rich harmonic language, and Catarina’s compositions were key to a performance infused with the musical connections between Portugal, Africa and Brazil. Catarina's band performed regularly in the New York’s local Jazz scene. Together they created a repertoire of their original music, and versions of a new Jazz sound coming from Brazil, through composers like André Mehmari, António Loureiro, or the Argentinian Andrés Beeuwsaert. The quintet performances at Stowe Jazz Festival 2019 (Vermont) were so successful that Catarina and Ebinho are now creating the music for a new album of original music, that will also include their common love for poetry, by putting into music poets of the Portuguese language universe. Catarina’s writing for this new album is enriched by her research made for her former original music albums, “No Balanço do Mar” and “Radio Kriola”. Ebinho’s recently released album, “Engenheiros”, with poems of João Cabral de Melo Neto, and upcoming album, with songs composed for Manoel de Barros’ poems, are of absolute interest.

This musical exchange is rather complete in word, rhythm, melodic / harmonic language - a new approach to Afro-Brazilian-Portuguese sounds, in Jazz, and their live performance is lively and appealing.
