A concert to celebrate the release of Dmitry Samarov's book of music sketches and memories (out April 1st from Tortoise Books.) Hardcover, limited edition signed-and-numbered copies will be available for sale (or you can order yours now, if you can't wait!)
Author and artist Dmitry Samarov has written for the Chicago Tribune, the Reader, and more; here he turns his eye and pen towards the musical stage, sketching and describing a host of independent musicians he’s seen, crossed paths with, offered sofa space to, and taken out to breakfast over the course of the past few decades. From well-known names like Nick Cave and Mission of Burma to lesser-known greats like Bill MacKay and Condo Fucks, Samarov draws haunting portraits of artistry at the fringes of (and off the edges of) the mainstream, while also offering poignant and memorable essays not only about their work, but about musicianship and art, creativity and commerce—the perils of selling out, and the dangers of never doing so, and above all else, the thrill of creating something new. A love song and a lifer’s lament, Music to My Eyes is an exquisite tribute to the trials and triumphs of independent music.
Thalia Zedek & Chris Brokaw
Thalia Zedek is an unparalleled voice in rock music. Her music straddles the line between intimate and visceral. Zedek has received wide acclaim for her intense vocal performances and guitar playing in past projects Come, Uzi, Live Skull, and most recently her new trio E with Gavin McCarthy (Karate) and Jason Sidney Sanford (Neptune).
Chris Brokaw is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer and film composer based in Boston. He was born in New York City and raised in the outlying suburbs. He attended Oberlin College, where he took exactly two music-related classes: Multi-track Recording and Steel Drumming. Chris is perhaps best known for his work as the drummer in CODEINE and the guitarist in COME, who made several albums in the 1990's for the labels Sub Pop and Matador that are considered landmarks in American independent rock music.
Mel Lederman is a talented and seasoned performer, having honed his skills over many years of touring in the United States and Europe, both with his previous band Boston’s Victory at Sea, and as a member of the Thalia Zedek Band (fr. Come, Live Skull).
