The Mayans, like all ancient societies, were ardent observers of the cycles that exist in the Universe. They codified their findings in various calendars including the Haab which divided the solar transit into twenty day periods. At the end of each Haab cycle was the Wayeb, a five day period that existed outside of time. During these days the boundary between the world of men and gods was dissolved and the Mayans passed them in fearful austerity, praying to be spared from the wrath of the awesome chaotic forces unleashed by the Wayeb.
