All of these acts have roots in Boston's thriving DIY scene from the '90s.  The musicians on this bill have made integral contributions to the genres of math rock, and shoegaze, in addition to others. There is a nostalgic revival happening now, with reunions shows and album anniversaries, but it has also given way to new projects.

PTERODAN

Solo music project of Dan McCarthy. Songs heavily structured around drum sounds, polyrhythms and guitar loops. Playing a drum set and guitar, Dan follows the LOUD-QUIET-LOUD-WEIRD-QUIET-LOUD song structure. Using a looping pedal and various effects, he does his best to create songs he can play live without getting too complicated. Dan’s previous percussion projects include: Helms, Dagobah, Pizza, Challenger - all of which were influenced by the Math Rock and Slint Rock happening in the late 90’s - early 00’s. PTERODAN kind of falls somewhere in the genre, sort of.

RawBell

Rob Laakso's musicianship has spanned genres and decades. He is a longtime collaborator, multi-instrumentalist, and touring member with Kurt Vile. Formerly, he was the lead guitarist of Diamond Nights (hard rock), and The Wicked Farleys (melodic noisy math rock). He was also a later member of The Swirlies (lo-fi shoegaze, Taang! Records).  Rob's new project, Raw Bell, is a guitar-driven, mostly instrumental solo endeavor with Ken Bernard on drums (The Wicked Farleys, RaRaRiot). Raw Bell unites elements he brought to all of these bands.

The Maethtro

Justin Joyce (ex.PIZZA/Physical/BA-NA-NA's) can be described as Rush meets Rachmaninov working as an electronic, math rock one piece incorporating classical instrumentation with odd time signatures and percussion (in a three-piece suit).

Tim Traynor and the Gulf Club

A singer born amidst Midwestern lakes and veteran drummer of arena rock outfits Diamond Nights and Workout, Tim Traynor has recently completed recording his debut solo album which drops anchor in a brackish lagoon where the waters of calypso and classic rock make tropical contact. Intentional Castaway is a soundtrack fit for a Chuck Norris bar fight in a Cancun cantina or a Key West houseboat BBQ adult film set. Guest star musicians on the record include Jack Killen of KILLEN, Unkle Funkle of White Fang / The Memories, Will Berman of MGMT, Alex Forbes of Mick’s Jaguar and Ryan McGaffigan of karaoke night at The Milky Way. The 12/10 show at The Lilypad will be the maiden voyage of new backing band Gulf Club, as well as the release party for the upcoming album’s first single “Endless Summer”, which features backing vocals from Fin Moore of The Hot Season / Pizza / Phalen-Moore Trio.
