The second convening of a new, co-operative quartet convened by bassist Kit Demos. The music is deeply grounded in the relational, with a strong and engaging collective voice. Expect spontaneous offerings of groove and melody throughout.
This Music (TM) Series is a Boston musician’s initiative to recognize the creativity of many who haven’t been given the stage as leaders, often younger than the Jazz scene veterans; those with acknowledgment who can create a new project and musical ideas; and the unsung “gems” who aren’t in the public’ eye and deserve to be. The emphasis is on the freer forms, the adventurous (to help find a “home”).

Stephen Haynes
is an improviser, arts organizer and recording artist. His practice ranges from small groups to large orchestras with a focus on working directly with composers in the development of new music. His work is featured on Pillars, Tyshawn Sorey’s groundbreaking work for octet released on Firehouse 12 Records. He is also a founding member of Adam Rudolph’s East Coast version of Go: Organic Orchestra.
Haynes records for New Atlantis Records, most recently releasing Pomegranate, a quintet with Joe Morris, Ben Stapp, William Parker and Warren Smith. His pocket brass band, Knuckleball, features three cornets, tuba and drums with Taylor Ho Bynum, Herb Robertson, Ben Stapp and Eric Rosenthal. Expect a new recording release by this ensemble during 2021.
Haynes’ primary focus – since 2013 – has been the cornet. He performs on Schilke XA1 Shepherds Crook and Eb Soprano cornets as well as the 1040 FL flugelhorn and X4L Bb trumpet. Across all of his instruments, he relies upon a set of custom-designed Schilke mouthpieces.
Over the past 40 years, he has worked with a range of vanguard composers including Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, George Russell, Butch Morris, Rhys Chatham, LaMonte Young and Earle Brown.
Pandelis Karayorgis
Born in Athens, Greece in 1962, moved to Boston in 1985. Prior to that, studied piano and performed in various jazz groups in Athens while pursuing a degree in Economics. Earned BM and MM degrees in music from Boston's New England Conservatory while studying with Paul Bley, Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Dave Holland and Joe Maneri (composition
In the last thirty years mostly led or co-led numerous groups in performances at festivals and clubs in Europe and the United States and Canada. Recordings appear on labels such as Hat Art, HatOLOGY, Clean Feed, Not Two, Leo Records, Nuscope, Boxholder, Okkadisk, Cadence, Accurate, Leo Lab, Ayler and more recently on Driff Records, an artist-run label co-founded by Pandelis Karayorgis and Jorrit Dijkstra.
Some of the most extensive recording/performing collaborations have been with Nate McBride, Curt Newton, Ken Vandermark, Mat Maneri, Guillermo Gregorio, Jorrit Dijkstra, Jeb Bishop, Luther Gray, Jef Charland, Randy Peterson and Dave Rempis.
Notable projects include The Pandelis Karayorgis Quintet, The Whammies, The Pandelis Karayorgis Trio (whose first trio CD "Heart And Sack" was featured on National Public Radio's program Fresh Air), the mi3, Construction Party, System of 5, the quartet Matchbox, the large group Bathysphere and more recently, the quintet Cutout, the Pools and Cliff trios and the Double trio CliffPools.

The former pupil of Ed Blackwell provides examined and performed a lot more than American jazz drumming; he in addition has delved into Western world African traditional and South Indian traditional percussion. Rosenthal provides performed and improvised with Anthony Braxton, Mat Maneri, Pandelis Karayorgis, Mario Pavone, as well as the Either/Orchestra. He provides performed around THE UNITED STATES and European countries, and made an appearance in Greece on the Patras Jazz Celebration, at Montreal’s North Ocean Jazz festival, also at Finland’s Pori Celebration. Besides making his very own improvised music recordings, he also shows up on CDs using the Hypnotic Clambake as well as the Zairean soukous music group Freestyle.The later ’90s found Rosenthal busy within the group Naftule’s Wish. The music group provides two produces on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, Seek out the Golden Dreydl and Smash, Clap!
