Within the Hip Hop community, the term cypher refers to a friendly and usually semi-improvisational performance/gathering of rappers, beatboxers and/or breakdancers. A beat is played and different rappers pass verses back and forth to each other—like a rap battle without the competitive aspect, in which the performers aren’t usually insulting each other. Traditionally, the cypher is in a circle, but anytime rappers pass unrehearsed verses back and forth over a beat is considered a cypher.
