The Boston-based progressive jazz group Nondualism Trio presents "Nosferatu Funk" at the Lilypad! Featuring Mark Tipton (trumpet), James Heazlewood-Dale (bass), and Paul July Joseph (drums), Nondualism Trio will be playing original works, including Mark's compositions from their upcoming album, "Nosferatu Funk." The set will include: "Paraconsistent Refractions," "Walk-A-Seven Ghost Dance," "Lithospheric Waltz," "Cosmic Dust Groove Thang," "Into the Wilderness," "Slow Burn," "Nosferatu Funk," a pair of musical "Mantras," and more! Expect deep grooves, musical complexity, and synergistic ensemble playing.
Nondualism Trio is a Boston-based progressive jazz trio that includes Mark Tipton on trumpet, James Heazlewood-Dale on bass, and Paul July Joseph on drums. Mark is originally from Maine, James is originally from Australia, and Paul is from Haiti. Nondualism Trio was formed in 2025 and in February 2026 they recorded their first album at Q Division Studios in Cambridge, MA, featuring Mark’s original compositions. They have recently performed at The Lilypad in Cambridge, The Drake in Amherst, and NEC’s Pierce Hall.
The ensemble’s name, Nondualism Trio, is derived from the Indian philosophy that views reality as an interconnected whole, devoid of dualistic thinking, whereby awareness can be experienced beyond conceptual thought. It is this state of mind that Nondualism Trio seeks to embody when they are performing together: collectively open-minded in their improvisations to carry the music wherever it wants to go, and free from judgements and intuited mental road-blocks. Their music is both structured and open.
The three members of Nondualism Trio are all rising talents in jazz, and are all active musicians on the Boston scene, seasoned touring musicians, and devoted teachers (Mark at NEC, James at Brandeis, and Paul through his private studio). James and Mark have recently toured Turkey, Cypress, and the Northeastern US with Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol and both his jazz quintet and classical Turkish music ensemble, DÜNYA, while Paul and Mark have recently toured New England. They enjoy connecting with diverse audiences and inspiring young musicians.
Mark Tipton is a Boston-based jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator who has recently been appointed as Assistant Chair of Jazz Studies at NEC. He has recently performed and/or recorded with Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Holland, Antonio Sanchez, Eguie Castrillo, Jason Moran, Allan Chase, Edmar Colón, Diego Figueiredo, Joe Hunt, Ayn Inserto, Tom Varner, and Mehmet Sanlikol. His Boston-based jazz octet released its debut album Vernacular Stretch in December 2025 at Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn, and his progressive jazz group Nondualism Trio recorded their debut album in February 2026, featuring Mark on trumpet, James Heazlewood-Dale on bass, and Paul July Joseph on drums. Mark has toured the US, Europe, Turkey, and Cypress with numerous ensembles, and he holds a DMA degree from NEC. He enjoys sharing the joys of creative improvisation with students and audiences of all ages.
James Heazlewood-Dale is a Grammy-nominated bassist and a professor at Brandeis University, where he lectures on film music and video game history. Originally from Sydney, Australia, he moved to Boston to pursue studies in jazz double bass at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory, where he received full scholarships. Dr. Heazlewood-Dale has shared the stage with world-renowned artists, including Jacob Collier, Maria Schneider, Grace Kelly, Terence Blanchard, Zakir Hussain, and Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol. He has presented at esteemed national conferences, including those for the American Musicological Society, the Musicological Society of Australia, the Jazz Education Network, and the College Music Society. Notably, he was commissioned by Decca Records to craft the liner notes for the soundtrack release of The Callisto Protocol (2022) and featured as a scholarly guest in Adam Neely's acclaimed video essay "The Nintendo-fication of Jazz."
Drummer Paul July Joseph is from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and is currently studying Contemporary Musical Arts at the New England Conservatory of Music. He recently won a major award from the Percussive Arts Society, and has competed in Drumfest, Le Batteur, and Drum-Off Global. He has worked with Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop, has performed at the Panama Jazz Festival, and recently joined Akili Jamal Haynes and World of Chibuzo for a performance at Carnegie Hall, sponsored by the United Nations. His drum teachers have included Prosper Prevoit, Austin MacMahon, and Obed Calvaire. Paul is currently working on a project, Creole Jazz Fusion, which blends Haitian folk styles such as Yanvalou, Congo, Ibo, Kompa, and Zouk with jazz. He performs regularly with ensembles led by Itay Dayan, Sam Saomek Srithongkum, and Mark Tipton.
