Saxophonist and composer Pat Donaher returns to the Lilypad with a reimagining of one of his oldest projects, Demodacus. It will be an evening of original music, some new and some from Donaher’s debut as a leader in the late 90s, all inspired by Homer’s Odyssey.
Musicians::
Pat Donaher- woodwinds
Zoe Murphy- trumpet
Caio Aiofune- guitar
Ian Ashby- bass
Lee Fish- drums
Donaher has been enchanted by the Odyssey since a young age, inspired by his classicist father. For his first performances at New York’s legendary Knitting Factory in 1999, he assembled a book of music largely inspired by the Odyssey featuring some of New York’s hottest young players. For this performance he has expanded the book to reflect his awe of Emily Wilson’s translation, and recruited some of Boston’s finest players to interpret it- Zoe Murphy on trumpet, Caio Afiune on guitar, Ian Ashby on bass, and Lee Fish on drums.
Downbeat magazine called Donaher’s recent album Occasionally “an occasion unto itself, a dual showcase for Donaher’s alto playing and compositional chops…” Featuring an all-star lineup of Allison Miller, Jason Palmer, Carmen Staaf and Tony Scherr, the album visits a series of seminal events in Donaher’s life. Donaher has also released three other recordings, and performed with a wide range of musicians, from Benny Carter to Steve Vai.
There is a $20 cover charge, and beer and wine will be served. The Lilypad is located on 1353 Cambridge Street in Inman Square. For more information please contact Pat Donaher at 617-721-0741 or pat@patdonaher.com
